Other Truly Free Website Creation Options

These are the options that are truly free, and won't lock you into some future price increase by the owners.

WordPress.com

WordPress.com offers a free plan with WordPress branding, making it a great choice for personal blogs or small websites. It provides a range of customizable templates and is user-friendly for beginners. The free plan includes essential features like SEO tools and social sharing options, but has limitations on customization and monetization.

The Cost: Wordpress.com starts to charge you once you upgrade to one of their premium plans. The Personal plan, ideal for personal use, starts at a nominal fee per month, offering a custom domain name and removing WordPress ads. For more advanced features, such as advanced design customization, unlimited premium themes, and the ability to earn ad revenue, the Premium plan is available at a higher monthly rate. Businesses and organizations may opt for the Business plan, which includes additional SEO tools, plugins, and the ability to install themes, making it suitable for more robust websites. Lastly, for ultimate control and capabilities, the eCommerce plan supports full-fledged online stores with features like integrated payment processing and advanced marketing tools. Each successive plan offers more features, catering to a range of needs from personal blogs to large-scale e-commerce sites.

Free version limitations: Firstly, it displays WordPress.com ads on your site, which cannot be removed or controlled. Secondly, you're limited to basic customization options, meaning you can't access premium themes or extensively modify the design and layout of your site. The free plan also lacks the ability to install plugins, and you can not edit the HTML on your site directly. You can't use JavaScript, so installing adsense or another ad platform is not allowed. Lastly, storage space is limited, which can be a constraint for sites needing to host a large amount of media. These limitations make the free version suitable primarily for basic blogging or small personal sites.

Blogger

Blogger is a free platform by Google ideal for simple, blog-focused websites. It offers integration with other Google services, like Google Analytics and AdSense. Blogger is known for its ease of use, with customizable templates and basic blogging tools, making it suitable for beginners. The platform allows for personalization through HTML editing for those who are more technically inclined.

The Cost: Blogger is completely free to use. There are no premium plans, meaning all features are available without any cost. But it's also impossible to upgrade to a higher tier and receive better service.

Free version limitations: The platform is not as flexible or powerful as other website builders, offering limited design and customization options. It lacks advanced features like sophisticated SEO tools, plugins, and e-commerce capabilities. The template designs are relatively basic and may not suit more complex or professional website needs. Additionally, being a Google product, there is always a dependency on Google's terms and services, and the platform could be subject to changes in Google's product lineup. These limitations make Blogger ideal for basic blogging but potentially limiting for more advanced website requirements.

Google Sites

Google Sites is a free and easy way to create and share webpages. It's perfect for simple projects and personal sites. This platform integrates seamlessly with other Google products, such as Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets, allowing for easy embedding and collaboration. Google Sites offers a drag-and-drop interface, making it accessible to users with no technical background. The platform, however, has limited design and functionality options compared to more specialized website builders.

The Cost: Google Sites is entirely free. There are no premium plans specifically for Google Sites, which means all features are available without any additional cost. Users can create and publish sites at no charge, leveraging the seamless integration with other Google Workspace tools. However this is the gameplan - Google wants you to have to use Google's other services, which is about $12 per month per user.

Free Version Limitations: While Google Sites is free, it does come with certain limitations. Firstly, it does not allow for custom JavaScript or direct HTML editing. This limits the ability to add custom functionality or deeply customize the design beyond what is provided through the standard interface. Secondly, the design and layout options are relatively basic and might not suit those looking for highly sophisticated or unique website designs. Thirdly, while it integrates well with other Google services, it lacks some advanced features found in more dedicated website builders, such as comprehensive SEO tools, e-commerce capabilities, or extensive plugin ecosystems. These limitations make Google Sites ideal for simple, straightforward websites, particularly for users who prioritize ease of use and integration with Google Workspace over advanced customization and features.

More Options - Might Cost

While the following website creation platforms may start with free options, they often lead to paid plans for more advanced features, customization, and better performance. These platforms are ideal for users who anticipate scaling their websites or require more professional features.

Wix

Wix is a popular website builder known for its extensive customization options and user-friendly drag-and-drop interface. It offers a free plan, but to remove Wix ads and connect a custom domain, you'll need to upgrade to a paid plan. Wix is ideal for small businesses, online stores, and artists, thanks to its wide range of design templates and apps.

Wix also provides advanced features like an AI-driven website design tool, e-commerce capabilities, and robust SEO tools. The platform is continuously updating with new features and designs, keeping your website at the forefront of modern web design trends. However, once you choose a template in Wix, you cannot change it without creating a new project.

Squarespace

Squarespace is renowned for its sleek, professionally-designed templates that are perfect for creatives, entrepreneurs, and bloggers. While there's no free tier, Squarespace offers a free trial, and its paid plans include a range of e-commerce and marketing tools. This platform stands out for its high-quality design aesthetics and functionality.

Squarespace is user-friendly and doesn’t require any coding skills. It also offers a comprehensive set of features like blogging tools, analytics, and support for various multimedia types. The platform's integration with third-party apps and services enhances its versatility for various business needs.

Weebly

Weebly, a subsidiary of Square, offers a free plan but, like others, places limitations on features and displays Weebly ads. It's a solid choice for small businesses and online stores, especially when you plan to upgrade as your business grows. The platform is known for its easy-to-use drag-and-drop builder and range of customizable templates.

Weebly provides excellent e-commerce tools in its paid plans, making it a go-to for businesses looking to sell online. It also offers SEO tools, email marketing, and inventory management features. The free plan is a good starting point, but for a professional look and advanced features, upgrading to a paid plan is necessary.

These platforms offer more advanced features and support, making them a great choice for users who need more than just a basic website and are willing to invest in their web presence.
